The EU AI Act enforcement deadline is August 2026, and all AI systems deployed in the EU will need to meet specific technical requirements around risk management, data governance, documentation, logging, human oversight, and security. The author built an open-source scanner called AIR Blackbox to check Python AI codebases against these requirements, and then tested it on 5 popular open-source AI projects: Browser Use, RAGFlow, LiteLLM, Superlinked, and AIR Blackbox itself. The results were eye-opening, with the external projects scoring between 2.5% and 48% compliance, and consistently struggling the most with record-keeping and audit trails. In contrast, the author's own AIR Blackbox project scored 91% compliance, as it was purpose-built to address the EU AI Act requirements.
