AI agents are AI systems that can be given a high-level objective and then figure out how to achieve it on their own, using various tools and capabilities. Unlike basic chatbots that simply answer questions, AI agents can perform a series of actions, make decisions, and adapt their approach to complete a task end-to-end. This is enabled by three key characteristics: 1) the ability to take actions in the real world, not just generate text; 2) the capacity to reason across multiple steps, observing results and adjusting their approach; and 3) the focus on pursuing a goal or objective, not just responding to individual prompts. AI agents leverage techniques like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to maintain context and memory across interactions, allowing them to build on previous knowledge and actions. This makes them much more capable of fitting into people's workflows and assisting with complex, multi-part tasks.
